It’s the Birthday!

So far we have been celebrating the birth month, then the birth week and finally we have reached the birthday. That’s right ladies and gentlemen. Today is a day to remember. The 20th of July marks the day an incredible guy first opened his eyes in a world he loves to explore, develop and enjoy. As we speak (or write or read), he is putting his creativity and perception to work in his profession. What better way to study and influence the world than through the pursuit of engineering. Even his free time is consumed with reading, listening and watching to glean a better understanding of the way things work. He is an eternal student. Perhaps he will never truly get old as fresh ideas stimulate his mind daily.

How to celebrate the birth of such a man? He may be most content to have a celebration in quiet with only the ideas in his mind to delight him, but then the rest of us may feel left out. More likely he’ll be gracious and humor those who desire to celebrate with him. After all, everyone needs a little cheese cake every now and then. Our attempts to shower him with attention and gaiety may only make him feel shy and fatigued. Yet, he is an incredible man, one with extra patience for the giddy attention mongers around him. He has an interesting mystique. The more he seeks solitude, the more people are attracted to spending time with him. I for one can attest to the delight of simply being in the same room with him as he studies a puzzle or drinks his tea.

I have also had the privilege of observing his transformation from collegiate youth to successful professional, husband and leader. While maintaining his humble character, he has developed an admirable self-confidence. He has overcome physical and relational challenges to arrive at his 29th birthday with hope and courage in his heart. I wanted to take the time to applaud him. Hip! Hip! Hooray! Here’s to many more, my love!
